Environmental Disposal & EU Regulations

1. Environmental Protection Act 1990 & Environment Act 1995

Existing legislation places a Duty of Care on organisations to ensure that wastes produced are consigned to registered carriers and properly disposed of at licensed facilities.

ICEX Ltd not only demonstrates this but also audits their key suppliers and waste processors to verify the quality of supply chain partners in accord with our registration to the International Quality Standard.

2. Health & Safety At Work. Etc. Act 1984 & Electricity Act 1989 Safety Regulations

Electrical equipment needs to be tested for safety in accordance with the Electricity Act 1989 Safety Regulations.

ICEX Ltd use calibrated electrical test equipment and certificated processes to ensure computer equipment is safe to reuse, protecting our employees and future users.

3. Data Protection Acts 1984 & 1999

Organisations have a Duty of Care obligation to take all reasonable steps to ensure data they hold is not released in an unauthorised or accidental way. This applies to all storage media, including Hard Disc Drives in PCs and Servers.

ICEX Ltd deletes all data using the purpose designed Blancco system, which overwrites all data. Faulty drives are disabled prior to destructive shredding for material recycling. All equipment weather working or non working will pass through data deletion prior to disposal. Magnetic media tapes are incinerated to guarantee destruction.

4. Software Operating Licences

Software is usually supplied under licences that specifically prohibit resale – rendering users who sell such software liable to prosecution under civil law.

ICEX Ltd deletes system software protecting clients from fines and embarrassing bad publicity.

5. Landfill Directive

This EC Directive became UK law in July 2001. Land filling of most waste materials will require pre-treatment, making recycling more attractive. IT waste containing hazardous materials this is banned from landfill without pre-treatment.

6. Hazardous Waste

Changes to the EC Hazardous Waste Catalogue has come into force making Cathode Ray Tubes (from monitors & TVs) designated as hazardous waste. In combination with the Landfill Directive, this means that disposal of CRTs has become more complex and more costly.

7. WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment)

Now in force by the European Parliament, this EC Directive was implemented into Member States law in 2005. The WEEE Directive proposal sets targets for recovery (75 % by weight) and recycling (65% by weight) of IT and other electrical and electronic equipment. Also, WEEE IT must be pre-treated before disposal to remove printed circuit boards, LCDs, toner cartridges, CRTs and batteries – all of which are hazardous to human health and our environment.

ICEX Ltd complies with the WEEE directive for the recycling and disposal of end of life IT.

ICEX remarketed for reuse and recycled over 80% by weight of items received for processing. Materials recycling of equipment for which there is no commercial market recovers steel, aluminium, copper and iron. Chips are reclaimed, along with precious metals - gold, palladium, and silver.
